An album as peculiar and sewer-dwelling as МАПП’s mutated “123456789” delights the senses with such endless possibility. Beyond out there, it exists within its own encapsulated universe. The sound feels completely free devoid of any restraint. Over the course of the album, it draws from a wide variety of unique influences, noise, experimental, jungle, no-wave, with a decidedly punk ethos. Highly reminiscent at times of the similarly no fucks given ethos of Stilluppsteypa, the whole of the album feels completely raw, gritty, and visceral. Natural with its sheer physicality the oftentimes demented cadence also recalls Shit & Shine’s more recent excursions into chopped and screwed dance tracks gone horribly wrong.

Rhythm exists only as a thing to be compressed and elongated as needed. Melody, riffs, these are secondary to the exploration and dissection of discernible grooves. For МАПП the main focus remains upon the unflinching exploration of texture. It is the textural elements and electroacoustics that truly stun. Completely maddening, the tracks expand ambitiously seemingly into the infinite. Narratives form within these pieces, ones that constantly befuddle the listener. Truly fascinating to behold МАПП offers a look at sound when it is completely liberated from all constraints.

Unleashing a downward spiral into true insanity “123” takes an already tortured sample and messes with it. Various bursts of noise further emphasize a mechanical churn slowly breaking down. Nearly hypnotic, the wall of noise must be surrendered to in order to fully appreciate the later space-related acoustics that takes hold. Straddling the gaps between jungle, noise, and glitch “456” goes very hard. While there are beats, they signify nothing in particular, rather hinting at a sense of general unease. The pitch shifts further add to the pure energy of the song seemingly bouncing up and down. Saving the best for last “789” closes everything on a high note. Layers of drone intermingle to create a virtual stream of consciousness. Over the course of the sprawling epic, the way that it evolves reveals a true talent for form.

“123456789” explores a slew of genres, torn asunder and reconfigured into dazzlingly weird worlds, showing off МАПП’s infinite attention to detail.
